A visionary leader for over a decade, Rebecca Saltzman has championed sustainable transportation leadership in El Cerrito and the broader Bay Area, aligning her work with California’s green goals. She’s pushing bold plans to make cleaner transit options more accessible by:

  • Expanding walking and biking trails
  • Increasing bus schedules
  • Creating car-free retail corridors

Leading BART with Purpose

As a BART board director for more than 10 years, Saltzman has driven transformative changes. Her key achievements include:

  • Supporting low-income fare vouchers
  • Advocating for affordable housing near BART stations
  • Securing federal funding for system improvements
  • Growing financial reserves for future sustainability

She also spearheaded the creation of the Progressive Policing Bureau, which provides assistance to homeless individuals and those in crisis at BART stations. Her leadership roles include:

  • Serving as BART board president twice
  • Chairing the BART Audit Committee and
  • Chairing previously the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority Board, and the BART-AC Transit Interagency Liaison Committee

Advocating for Cleaner, Safer Transit

Beyond BART, Saltzman’s commitment to sustainable transportation shines through her work with Bike East Bay. As Development Director, she advocates for:

  • Safer bike infrastructure
  • Replacing car trips with biking or walking

Her efforts aim to create a cleaner, more accessible future for all Bay Area residents.

Environmental and Social Justice Champion

With seven years of leadership at the California League of Conservation Voters, Saltzman has rallied more than 100 organizations to drive critical reforms in:

  • Environmental protection
  • Public health
  • Social justice

In 2011, her dedication to increasing civic engagement earned her the Making Democracy Work Award from the League of Women Voters of Oakland.
