Local Action for a Better World

Why Local Elections Matter for the Climate

Air quality. Emissions. Transit. Wildfires. Heat waves. Greener neighborhoods—or not.

Local leaders—mayors, city councils, and county supervisors—make decisions that profoundly affect our daily lives. Their choices shape energy use, public transportation, land development, and emergency plans. They determine how well we prepare for heat waves, floods, and wildfires. They can support or hinder efforts for renewable energy, improved transit, and greener communities.

These leaders wield significant power with local and global implications. Cities contribute approximately 75% of global emissions, and more than 60% of the U.S. population resides in urban areas. In Contra Costa County, that figure is around 90%. Nearly all of us live in urban or suburban settings, which means we are part of the problem.

However, we can also be part of the solution. Electing local leaders who recognize their role in addressing climate change is a crucial step. That’s why we are endorsing twenty local and state candidates committed to championing climate and environmental justice for everyone. Big Legislative Wins for Climate and Community Health!

It’s been an exciting year in the California Legislature! While we didn’t win on every front, we’re thrilled that some of the key bills we were fighting for got signed into law. Here are a few highlights:

  • AB 3233 gives local governments the power to ban or limit oil and gas operations to protect community health, safety, and the environment.
  • AB 1866 takes on California’s 40,000 idle oil wells, requiring oil operators to create a plan to plug them all within the next decade—starting with those near homes, schools, and parks.
  • AB 2716 cracks down on low-producing wells that are still polluting within the 3,200-foot setback zone. The new law imposes a $10,000-per-day penalty for operating these wells near sensitive areas.

Explore the successful bills we lobbied for this year here! These wins help push California closer to a safer, cleaner future for all!
