In the last four years, as El Cerrito City Councilmember and Mayor, Lisa Motoyama drove the city’s Climate Action Plan with renewable transit, sustainable housing, and EV infrastructure. She also spearheaded initiatives that promote sustainability, while working to restore financial stability and championing resilience. Here are some key highlights from her tenure:
- Climate Action: Passed the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP), taking crucial steps toward California’s greenhouse gas reduction goals.
- Transit Transition: Achieved a shift from diesel-fueled transit vehicles to renewable diesel, a first step marking a move toward cleaner public transportation under the CAAP.
- Sustainable Housing: Advocated for transit-oriented housing planning that integrates sustainability into new developments.
- Stabilized Finances: Steered El Cerrito away from fiscal instability when the pandemic hit in 2020. Today, the city enjoys a strong financial footing with a dedicated Emergency Relief fund and resources for future pension obligations.
Looking ahead, Motoyama commits to enhancing California’s climate goals by:
- Expanding EV Infrastructure: Advocating for more electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
- Creating Resilience Centers: Working to secure funding for an expanded library at the El Cerrito Plaza BART Station, transforming it into the city’s first heating, cooling, and clean-air center.
- Building Electfication: Supporting all-electric in new buildings.
With 30 years experience in low-income housing, including as a senior housing finance consultant, Motoyama has worked tirelessly to create affordable homes and streamline sustainable development. A 19-year resident of the city, Councilwoman Motoyama proudly celebrates El Cerrito’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
