Two key bills before the California legislature if passed will give Californians vastly more information about corporations’ role in the climate crisis. SB 253 and SB 261 are closely related; it’s critical we get them both passed into law.
Good news! In our June newsletter, we asked you to call Governor Newsom’s office and request that he support the legislature’s budget calling for public transit systems funding. On July 30, the governor announced that he and the legislature had “reached an agreement that provides $5.1 billion in emergency relief to support statewide public transit systems and their workers.”
In May, 350 Contra Costa, Diablo Valley College, and Greenbelt Alliance presented a conference for elected officials, government staff, community-based orgs, and labor, education, and workforce development groups. The topic was IRA—the $369 billion federal Inflation Reduction Act.
Good news! During the Legislature’s floor session, May 30th – June 2nd, many important climate bills passed their “first house”—the Senate or Assembly—and are now making their way through committees in their second house. Among these, two Senate bills aiming to shed light on corporations’ carbon emissions and climate-related financial risks.
Transportation accounts for about 40 percent of all GHG emission in California. Industrial activity and buildings—our homes and everything else–together make up another 45 percent. We have the solutions. We CAN stop burning fossil fuels now.
