Local Action for a Better World

When a climate disaster strikes, who pays?

You, the American taxpayer!

That’s right, we are all paying the costly price of climate change. Climate adaptation and disaster costs directly hit our pocket books. We pay for higher insurance premiums, higher PG&E energy costs, loss of housing, local and state taxes for disaster recovery, infrastructure repairs, emergency response expenses, and health harms from extreme weather disasters.

The Climate Superfund Bill would make polluters pay into an emergency fund that could help communities recover from the impacts of climate change. These companies are reaping record profits while taking no responsibility for their dangerous greenhouse gas emissions that alter our climate. The Climate Superfund shifts existing costs from taxpayers to the major polluting oil companies that helped supercharge the climate crisis and extreme weather events. Read more on our website blog.

Act Now and support the Climate Superfund Bill

Tell Your Legislator to Protect Central Contra Costa: Make Polluters Pay!

Central Costa Residents: Assembly Member Rebecca Bauer Kahan needs to hear from you. Kahan is a member of the Assembly’s Judicial Committee, which can pass on the Superfund for a vote by the full chamber, or stop it dead. Call her office at (925) 244-1600 or (916) 319-2016. Say, “I urge Assembly Member Kahan to support the Climate Superfund Bill, AB 1243.” Make sure to tell them you are a constituent and give them your street address.

Or click below to submit your name and comment online.

You can also RSVP to join a Make Polluters Pay Rally on May 27 HERE. We want to have a huge turnout from across the state to demonstrate the power and momentum behind this bill.

Valero Refinery Closure

Valero Refinery in Benicia announced that it will close next year. The refinery has a contentious relationship with the city and was recently fined for long standing air pollution violations. Four hundred full time workers will lose their jobs and Benicia will lose a major source of tax revenue. Read more on our website blog or listen to NPR Forum.

The Contra Costa Climate Circle

The Contra Costa Climate Circle is a Zoom meeting for the climate concerned. Come connect with like minded folks and discuss current events in a safe and friendly space. All are welcome. We look forward to meeting you!

This month: Climate: Breaking the Spiral of Silence---Why We Don’t Talk and How We Can Start

Are you comfortable talking to friends, family, or neighbors about climate change? If not, you’re far from alone. A recent global study found that 89% of people are concerned about climate change, yet most of us rarely talk about it. This silence—known as the Spiral of Silence—stems from fear of conflict, judgment, or just not knowing what to say. But silence slows progress. Facts alone don’t shift opinions—emotion, trust, and connection do. Join us for the next Climate Circle on Monday, June 2, to explore how to break the silence and start climate conversations that matter.

Volunteer Spotlight - Margaret

Margaret has been volunteering with 350 CCA since April 2020 and is the co-lead of the Communications Team. It is a natural fit, as she has always been fascinated by language and how people communicate and has worked with K-12 English learners, as well as international MBA students and international tech executives. Her favorite part of working with 350 CCA is that “we are a team, that we work together, that we listen to each other, that we can express differing opinions.”

Margaret encourages anyone who is curious to take a chance on volunteering. “We can accelerate change faster the more people that we have helping,” she says. “You don’t need to be an expert. It just takes time and exposure and willingness.”

“I love to see people come in, find their niche and keep going,” Margaret says. “I really think that everybody has a special gift. You have to give them a chance to show their colors.”
