Many of us feel a sense of urgency at the alarming actions of the Trump administration and the accelerating pace of climate change. We want to do something, but fear our individual actions are too little or too late. Our 350 Contra Costa Action team wants to remind you that every action we do to support democracy, to fight climate change, and to work towards an equitable and sustainable society makes a difference. It is a critical time to take local action, join a group, become a volunteer, or work for positive change. Our collective resistance and dream of a better world are acts of hope, unity, and creation. What we do today, matters to the future. The 350 Contra Costa Action community can show you how. Together, let’s take action. The time is now.
The Contra Costa Climate Circle is a Zoom meeting for the climate concerned. Come connect with like minded folks and discuss current events in a safe and friendly space. All are welcome. We look forward to meeting you!
This month, the focus is on wildfire. Wildfires in California in the past 10 years have destroyed thousands of homes and burned millions of acres of forest, polluting the air we breathe and releasing harmful carbon dioxide into the earth’s atmosphere. As a result of catastrophic wildfires, homeowners’ fire insurance is becoming prohibitively expensive, or unavailable. How could future local wildfires impact us and our neighborhoods? What can we do to make our homes and communities more fire safe? The Climate Circle takes place the first Monday of the month from 12-1pm.

The Yale Program on Climate Communication shows that here in Contra Costa County, 67 percent of adults believe that fossil fuel companies are responsible for global warming. That’s no surprise to locals with the number of explosions and fires in our fossil fuel friendly county with major oil refineries lining the highway 680 refinery corridor.
A major refinery fire blackened the skies February 1st at the Martinez Refining Company. Martinez residents are fed up with the delayed or lack of community warning, the non-disclosure of chemicals released, continued safety failures, and the endangerment of community health and welfare. Here is Mayor Zorn’s instagram post. Read more at this Sunflower-Alliance Blog and Healthy Martinez.
ACTION: Speak Out! Tell the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors to protect citizen health and to enforce safety reforms at the refineries. Find your Supervisor on the map with links to call or email. Even if you don’t live by the refineries, your supervisor needs to hear that YOU CARE about your neighbors’ health.
RALLY: Support Greenpeace "We Will Not Be Silenced" Rally in San Francisco on Tuesday 2/18 -- Noon - 2 pm. This is a SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) lawsuit by Big Oil against Greenpeace for $300 million for supporting indigenous land rights at the Dakota Access Pipeline. It is an attempt to erode the right of public protest and to intimidate and bankrupt environmental activist organizations.
We applaud our ally Sunflower Alliance in the success of their lawsuit. CalGEM allowed an oil drilling company to re-open a dry gas well without any CEQA review, after the well had been closed for a whopping 47 years! This has frightening implications for reactivating closed wells throughout the state.
DONATE: 350CCA has made a donation to support Sunflower’s legal expenses. Read more about the Sunflower Alliance Lawsuit and make a donation to help support their legal expenses!
Kudos to the Science Moms Superbowl commercial for a universal values message to protect the people and places we love.
Thank you—
