Communities rising up to oppose Montezuma CarbonHub

The Montezuma NorCal Carbon Sequestration Hub is a dangerous, foolhardy project that must be stopped. And affected communities are opposing it! They’re petitioning their city councils to pass a resolution calling on the US Environmental Protection Agency to deny permits for the project.

This carbon waste dumping project proposes to capture some of the carbon pollution from refineries, power plants, and other industrial facilities around the Bay Area, compress it, and pump it through pipelines to an injection site near ecologically sensitive wetlands in southern Solano County. This project would increase environmental injustice in the Bay Area—and it would not significantly reduce carbon emissions from polluting facilities in the region.

Because of the incentives in place, carbon capture projects like Montezuma could also let refineries and power plants across the Bay Area continue polluting indefinitely, while increasing the risk of CO2 pipeline leaks. CO2 leaks can lead to asphyxiation, seizures, loss of consciousness, and even death for people and animals.

In five of the cities threatened by Montezuma, virtual petitions to city councils aim to halt the project before it starts. If you live in one of these five cities, please follow the link below and sign without delay! And, if you know people who live in any of these cities, please forward the link and urge them to sign and share.

Virtual petitions:

For Antioch residents

For Benicia residents

For Richmond residents

For Suisun City residents

For Vallejo residents

No matter which city you live in—your help is needed to spread the word and gather signatures! If you can help with tabling or handing out flyers, please fill out this form. Together, we can STOP MONTEZUMA!

Richmond makes Chevron pay—but not with a tax

On August 14, the Richmond City Council voted unanimously to approve a $550 million settlement with Chevron, to be paid out over the next ten years.

Back on June 18, Richmond City Council had voted to put an excise tax targeting Chevron’s Richmond Refinery on the November ballot. If the Polluters Pay Initiative had passed—which seemed likely—it would have added $60 to $90 million per year to the city’s General Fund. Two grassroots groups, Asian-Pacific Environmental Network Action and Communities for a Better Environment Action, spearheaded the Make Polluters Pay campaign.

The settlement calls for $50 million to be paid to Richmond per year for the first five years, rising to $60 million per year for the next five years. In exchange, the council has voted to remove the tax initiative from the ballot. Read the details in this article from the Richmond Progressive Alliance.

Now, the campaign to make polluters pay will focus on making sure these funds are used to address the harms Chevron has caused and meet immediate needs of frontline communities—and to invest in a just transition that builds a future beyond oil for Richmond.
