We Must Stop the Montezuma NorCal Carbon Sequestration Hub
The Montezuma NorCal Carbon Sequestration Hub is a dangerous, foolhardy project that must be stopped. And affected communities are opposing it! They’re petitioning their city councils to pass a resolution calling on the US Environmental Protection Agency to deny permits for the project.
This carbon waste dumping project proposes to capture some of the carbon pollution from refineries, power plants, and other industrial facilities around the Bay Area, compress it, and pump it through pipelines to an injection site near ecologically sensitive wetlands in southern Solano County. This project would increase environmental injustice in the Bay Area—and it would not significantly reduce carbon emissions from polluting facilities in the region.
Because of the incentives in place, carbon capture projects like Montezuma could also let refineries and power plants across the Bay Area continue polluting indefinitely, while increasing the risk of CO2 pipeline leaks. CO2 leaks can lead to asphyxiation, seizures, loss of consciousness, and even death for people and animals.
