NO KINGS DAY

Saturday June 14th

The biggest climate issue is Democracy!

This month, we encourage you to take local action by protesting against the federal government. The Trump administration is assaulting both the environment and democracy. Without a functioning democracy that follows the rule of law, our efforts to protect the environment are being aggressively undone. The federal government is overturning national clean air and water protections, and de-regulating industrial pollution that harms the health of our communities and beloved natural spaces. These actions are without public input or due process and break the law. They are illegal.

Trump has launched a devastating assault on scientific research in all fields, especially climate change science. This anti-science administration has overturned most of our bedrock environmental regulations that were passed by bipartisan majorities in the 1970s. Trump’s mega budget bill includes a complete repeal of Biden’s landmark Inflation Reduction Act, which was the largest climate investment in U.S. history, allocating over $391 billion to various initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy. Trump has canceled previously approved projects and rescinded funds from clean energy projects that are shovel ready. The federal reversals have led to cancellations of billions of dollars of green projects throughout the nation, such as battery plants in Arizona and Georgia. The federal government is interfering with state’s rights, by revoking California projects and laws that were approved by our elected officials. Newsom is fighting back Trump's attempt to “Make America Smoggy Again.” California is standing up to the bully and letting the Trump administration know that we will fight to protect our democracy.

No Kings Day is a nationwide day of defiance organized by Indivisible, Mobilize.us and a coalition of pro-democracy organizations. People across the country will come together for marches, rallies, and demonstrations to reject corrupt, authoritarian politics in the United States. The event is counter-programming to Trump’s military parade in Washington, D.C. on his birthday.

This is an extremely challenging time for people who are worried about the climate and our country. Yet, our message remains the same. Action is still the best medicine for our angst. Your voice, energy, and time are the greatest gifts you can give. We encourage you to turn out with family and friends to protect our country and planet, and be uplifted as you join your neighbors and community. This is what Democracy looks like.

Refinery Shutdowns: Consequences for Our Communities

Are you concerned about Valero's announced closure? What happens if Chevron shuts down? Environmentalists point to improved health outcomes and progress towards a carbon-free future. Industry argues that gasoline prices and pollution will increase because we will have to import less-regulated gas. Unions fear their members will not find well-paying jobs if the refinery closes. Local city and state officials worry about loss of tax revenues.

We will discuss this multi-layered topic at our next Climate Circle on Monday, July 7, at 12:00 pm.

Thank you—

Jackie
