The climate emergency is on a global scale, but solutions can and must happen at every level of government—including city councils and county boards.
Local governments can reduce greenhouse gas emissions in lots of ways, and every locality needs to do its part in moving the planet toward a zero-emission future.
Here in Contra Costa, we’ve seen meaningful climate action in cities around the county. For example, Antioch and Brentwood banned oil and gas drilling; Pinole banned construction of new gas stations; and Richmond put a refinery tax on the ballot.
These actions would never have happened without climate-forward candidates getting voted onto city councils. And much more climate action is needed in these and other cities.
That's Where You Come In!
With the primaries weeks away, and general elections coming up in November, your help is needed to identify which local candidates are serious about climate solutions and deserve the endorsement of our parent organization, 350 Bay Area Action (350 BAA). In partnership with 350 BAA, our team researches and recommends for endorsement qualifying climate champions running in districts throughout Contra Costa County. These include state senate and assembly candidates in Contra Costa districts, as well as county supervisors and city council members.
Once 350 BAA announces our endorsed candidates, we ramp up to get out the vote and put those climate champions in public office!
As the election season moves into high gear, candidates will need our help. There’ll be phone-banking and postcard-writing events so we can do good and have fun at the same time.
Here are seven ways you can get involved. Pick one. Pick two. Pick all seven!
- Join the 350 Contra Costa Action (350 CCA) Electoral Team to help research candidates and recommend those who are climate champions for our organizational endorsement
- Support our endorsed candidates by buddying up with other 350 CCA folks to:
- Show up at their events and cheer for them
- Donate to their campaigns
- Table at farmers markets, etc., to help publicize their campaigns
- Knock on doors to speak with voters about them
- Write postcards and or make phone calls to help get out the vote for them
Won’t you please join us? Shoot an email to info@350contracostaaction.org for more information. Someone will contact you within the week.
