SUMMARY:Community Climate Forum: Health\, Air Pollution\, and Our Homes
DESCRIPTION:Join us April 16 for our first Community Climate Forum! This re-imagined version of our Climate Circle will bring together community members every other month for a one-hour online conversation focused on key climate and clean-air campaigns happening right here in Contra Costa and the Bay Area. This month\, the topic is Health\, Air Pollution\, and Our Homes. \nWe’ll provide a short overview of the issue\, then open the topic for discussion\, and simple actions participants can take to help move solutions forward. \nWhat’s Up about Air Pollution\, Our Homes\, and Our Health?\nMost people think of cars or industry when they think about air pollution. But gas appliances inside our homes\, especially furnaces and water heaters\, are actually one of the largest sources of nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution in the Bay Area. \nNOx pollution contributes to smog and fine particulate pollution that worsen asthma\, increase heart and lung disease\, and shorten lives. In fact\, pollution from fossil-fuel furnaces and water heaters in the region is linked to thousands of asthma attacks each year and dozens of premature deaths\, with significant health costs across our communities. \nAt our first Community Climate Forum\, we’ll explore: \n\nHow pollution from buildings affects public health in the Bay Area\nWhy reducing it matters for our communities\, and\nWhat cleaner technologies like electric heat pumps can offer for healthier homes\n\nWe’ll also discuss the Bay Area Air District’s upcoming standards that will begin phasing in cleaner replacements for gas appliances as they reach the end of their life\, starting with water heaters in 2027 and furnaces in 2029. These rules are currently under review. Community voices will play an important role in ensuring they remain strong while working well for all households. \nJoin us to learn more about this issue and how you can help support clean air protections in the Bay Area for healthier homes for all our families. \nRegister for the Community Climate Forum to be sent the Zoom link \n_____________________ \nImage created in Google Gemini

SUMMARY:August Climate Circle: Status of California Climate Action in Wake of OBBB Act
DESCRIPTION:Status of California Climate Action in Wake of OBBB Act\nIn early July Congress passed the budget reconciliation bill\, outrageously and erroneously dubbed “One Big Beautiful Bill.” It became law on July 4th. Among many other impacts\, this bill guts federal climate and clean energy funding throughout the country\, including eliminating rebates and tax credits for solar and wind farms\, rooftop solar\, electric vehicles and energy-efficient home upgrades.  Since solar and wind are currently less expensive sources of energy than fossil fuels\, utility rates are predicted to jump another ten percent in the next few years. \nSome of the Questions to be Discussed\nHow can California continue it’s clean energy initiatives without the federal funding provided by the Inflation Reduction Act? What can we do in our state\, county and cities to keep moving forward toward a healthier environment for all? \nJoin us on Monday\, August 4th\, 2025\, noon to 1 PM to discuss how the climate-related features of this budget act will affect California businesses and residents and what we can do about it. \nSign up here to receive the discussion materials and Zoom link. \nCome curious. Leave inspired. Everyone is welcome. \n\nImage credit: Akil Mazumder on Pexels

SUMMARY:July Climate Circle: Refinery Shutdowns--Consequences for Our Communities
DESCRIPTION:Refinery Shutdowns–Consequences for Our Communities\nAre you concerned about Valero’s announced closure of its Benicia refinery? What happens if Chevron shuts down? \n\nEnvironmentalists point to improved health outcomes and progress towards a carbon-free future.\nIndustry argues that gasoline prices and pollution will increase because we will have to import less-regulated gas.\nUnions fear their members will not find well-paying jobs if the refinery closes.\nLocal city and state officials worry about loss of tax revenues.\n\nAs California transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources\, we need a framework for scaling down refinery operations that includes refinery accountability\, community support and safety oversight.   \nJoin us to discuss this multi-layered topic at our next Climate Circle on Monday\, July 7\, at 12:00 pm.  \nSign up here to receive the discussion materials and Zoom link. \n\nImage credit: Christine Stevens

SUMMARY:June Climate Circle: Breaking the Spiral of Silence–Why We Don’t Talk and How We Can Start
DESCRIPTION:June Climate Circle: Breaking the Spiral of Silence\nAre you comfortable talking to your neighbors\, friends\, or family about climate change? If the answer is no\, you’ve got company. \nAccording to a recent global study by The Guardian and international newsrooms\, 89% of people are concerned about climate change—but most of us aren’t talking about it. \nFear of judgment\, disagreement\, or social tension silences us\nPsychologists and communication experts call it the Spiral of Silence—a powerful force that keeps us quiet when we fear judgment\, disagreement\, or social tension. We assume others aren’t concerned\, or that we don’t know enough\, so we stay silent—even with the people closest to us. \nConnection\, emotion\, and trust open pathways to change\nSilence slows progress. Research shows that people don’t change their minds through facts alone—they change through connection\, emotion\, and trust. If most of us want to accelerate climate action\, then the way forward starts with conversation. \nLet’s turn concern into connection—and silence into momentum\nJoin us for our next Climate Circle on Monday\, June 2\, as we explore how to break the climate spiral of silence. Learn how to talk about climate change in ways that open minds\, spark action\, and bring communities together. \nLet’s turn concern into connection—and silence into momentum. \nSign up here to receive the discussion materials and Zoom link. \n\nImage credit: Ekaterina Bolovtsova on Pexels

SUMMARY:May Climate Circle: Flipping the Grid--How Neighborhood Power Can Keep the Lights On
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the May 5 Climate Circle. This month’s topic focuses on flipping the grid with community-powered Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to keep the lights on when neighborhood power goes down. \nWhen the Power Goes Out\nHas your power gone out during a heatwave or wildfire warning—spoiling food\, shutting off fans\, or disconnecting critical medical equipment? A local\, community-based Distributed Energy Resources network can pick up the slack when the Big Grid fails. \nAs the climate crisis accelerates\, so do the threats to our electricity system. With more heatwaves\, droughts\, and storms\, utilities like PG&E are shutting off power more often to prevent wildfires. At the same time\, more people are switching to electric vehicles\, stoves\, and heaters—putting even more pressure on the grid. And it’s not just homes and cars—massive new data centers across the country consume enormous amounts of electricity to power cloud computing\, AI\, and the internet we all rely on. That demand is straining the grid even further. \nCan We Build Power in Our Own Neighborhoods?\nIt’s not a quick fix\, but the answer is yes. While it takes effort\, collaboration\, and some investment\, local communities are already starting to make it happen. By tapping into clean energy solutions like rooftop solar\, small wind installations\, home batteries\, electric vehicles\, and smart appliances—together\, these are known as Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)—we can create local power networks that make our neighborhoods more resilient—even when the grid goes down. The City of Richmond already uses such a network to provide more resilient and flexible power to its residents. \nJoin us on May 5 for a lively discussion on how communities are flipping the grid with DERs\, and what we can do in our own neighborhoods. Whether you’re just getting familiar with energy issues or you’ve studied them in depth\, there’s plenty to share and learn from each other. \nSign up here to receive the discussion materials and Zoom link. \nCome curious. Leave inspired. Everyone is welcome. \nThe Contra Costa Climate Circle is a Zoom meeting for the climate concerned. Come connect with like minded folks and discuss current events in a safe and friendly space\, each month\, the first Monday\, from 12-1 pm. All are welcome. SUMMARY:April Climate Circle: California’s Electric Rates Are Too High
DESCRIPTION:California’s electric rates are too high!\nThis month the Contra Costa Climate Circle will discuss California’s high electricity rates and possible solutions. \nAccording to the Legislative Analyst’s Office\, between 2019 and 2023\, residential rates rose by 47 percent. There is general agreement on the causes of the rate increase\, but considerable disagreement about solutions. How can we generate more local\, affordable electricity? Join the next Climate Circle on Monday\, April 7th to discuss issues and possible solutions. \nRegister here to receive the discussion materials and Zoom link. \nThe Contra Costa Climate Circle is a Zoom meeting for the climate concerned. Come connect with like minded folks and discuss current events in a safe and friendly space\, each month\, the first Monday\, from 12-1 pm. All are welcome. SUMMARY:Join a Contra Costa Climate Circle!
DESCRIPTION:The Contra Costa Climate Circle is a Zoom meeting for the climate concerned. Come connect with like minded folks and discuss current events in a safe and friendly space. All are welcome. We look forward to meeting you! \nThis month\, the focus is on wildfire. Wildfires in California in the past 10 years have destroyed thousands of homes and burned millions of acres of forest\, polluting the air we breathe and releasing harmful carbon dioxide into the earth’s atmosphere. \nAs a result of catastrophic wildfires\, homeowners’ fire insurance is becoming prohibitively expensive\, or unavailable. How could future local wildfires impact us and our neighborhoods? What can we do to make our homes and communities more fire safe? \nThe Climate Circle takes place the first Monday of the month from 12-1pm. \nRegister here to receive the discussion materials and Zoom link. \n\nImage Credit: dmncwndrlch on Pixaby
