SUMMARY:Webinar: Why California Needs the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund
DESCRIPTION:California wildfires are causing catastrophic damage—with a price tag around $250 billion. But why should taxpayers carry that cost while Big Oil gets a free pass? \nJoin us and our hosts at The Climate Center for a timely webinar on SB 684 (Menjivar) and AB 1243 (Addis)—legislation that would make fossil fuel companies pay into a Climate Superfund to support disaster recovery\, frontline communities\, and real climate action. \nHear from bill authors\, economists\, and advocacy leaders on how this bold plan can deliver justice and resilience for Californians. \nRegister here for the Climate Center Superfund webinar. \n\nImage Credit: Isabel Perlman

SUMMARY:May Climate Circle: Flipping the Grid--How Neighborhood Power Can Keep the Lights On
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the May 5 Climate Circle. This month’s topic focuses on flipping the grid with community-powered Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to keep the lights on when neighborhood power goes down. \nWhen the Power Goes Out\nHas your power gone out during a heatwave or wildfire warning—spoiling food\, shutting off fans\, or disconnecting critical medical equipment? A local\, community-based Distributed Energy Resources network can pick up the slack when the Big Grid fails. \nAs the climate crisis accelerates\, so do the threats to our electricity system. With more heatwaves\, droughts\, and storms\, utilities like PG&E are shutting off power more often to prevent wildfires. At the same time\, more people are switching to electric vehicles\, stoves\, and heaters—putting even more pressure on the grid. And it’s not just homes and cars—massive new data centers across the country consume enormous amounts of electricity to power cloud computing\, AI\, and the internet we all rely on. That demand is straining the grid even further. \nCan We Build Power in Our Own Neighborhoods?\nIt’s not a quick fix\, but the answer is yes. While it takes effort\, collaboration\, and some investment\, local communities are already starting to make it happen. By tapping into clean energy solutions like rooftop solar\, small wind installations\, home batteries\, electric vehicles\, and smart appliances—together\, these are known as Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)—we can create local power networks that make our neighborhoods more resilient—even when the grid goes down. The City of Richmond already uses such a network to provide more resilient and flexible power to its residents. \nJoin us on May 5 for a lively discussion on how communities are flipping the grid with DERs\, and what we can do in our own neighborhoods. Whether you’re just getting familiar with energy issues or you’ve studied them in depth\, there’s plenty to share and learn from each other. \nSign up here to receive the discussion materials and Zoom link. \nCome curious. Leave inspired. Everyone is welcome. \nThe Contra Costa Climate Circle is a Zoom meeting for the climate concerned. Come connect with like minded folks and discuss current events in a safe and friendly space\, each month\, the first Monday\, from 12-1 pm. All are welcome. We look forward to meeting you!\n\nImage Credit: Designed by redgreystock / Freepik

SUMMARY:CANCELLED! Congressman DeSaulnier Hosts Environmental Town Hall and Fair May 3
DESCRIPTION:Update April 30\, 2025: We received notice this afternoon that the Congressman has had to cancel this event. \nFrom Congressman DeSaulnier: \nHere in California\, we’ve seen firsthand the disastrous effects of climate change from devastating wildfires to more extreme temperatures. Amid this climate crisis\, the Trump Administration’s policies have undermined the tools we have to address global warming\, including rolling back environmental protections and withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement. \nTo discuss the path forward and my efforts in Congress to fight back against the Administration’s dangerous actions\, I am hosting an outdoor Environmental Town Hall and Resource Fair this Saturday\, May 3rd in Oakley. \nStarting at 1:30 p.m.\, local agencies and organizations will share resources on their work to protect the environment. At 2:00 p.m.\, I will provide an update on my efforts to protect our planet\, and we will hear from several local agency leaders about the work being done at the local level. We will also take your questions. \nThis event is RSVP only and the venue has limited capacity. Click here to RSVP. Confirmed attendees will receive more information\, including the exact location\, prior to the event. \nI hope you will join us for this conversation.

DESCRIPTION:Join Earthjustice\, Industrious Labs\, and Sierra Club for a webinar on Thursday\, April 24th at 6pm to learn about how we can clean up California’s polluting manufacturing sector. SUMMARY:Join a Contra Costa Climate Circle!
DESCRIPTION:The Contra Costa Climate Circle is a Zoom meeting for the climate concerned. Come connect with like minded folks and discuss current events in a safe and friendly space. All are welcome. We look forward to meeting you! \nThis month\, the focus is on wildfire. Wildfires in California in the past 10 years have destroyed thousands of homes and burned millions of acres of forest\, polluting the air we breathe and releasing harmful carbon dioxide into the earth’s atmosphere. \nAs a result of catastrophic wildfires\, homeowners’ fire insurance is becoming prohibitively expensive\, or unavailable. How could future local wildfires impact us and our neighborhoods? What can we do to make our homes and communities more fire safe? \nThe Climate Circle takes place the first Monday of the month from 12-1pm. \nRegister here to receive the discussion materials and Zoom link. \n\nImage Credit: dmncwndrlch on Pixaby

SUMMARY:The Scale of Hope | Film and Q&A with Molly Kawahata
DESCRIPTION:Keep Cool with 350 Contra Costa!\n\n\n \n350 Contra Costa is delighted to host a free screening of The Scale of Hope on Thursday\, August 10\, 2023\, at 7:00 pm PT\, at the historic Orinda Theatre\, 4 Orinda Theatre Square\, Orinda CA 94563. \n\n\n \nThe scale of climate change can make an individual feel hopelessly small. Molly Kawahata knows this feeling well. As a former climate advisor to the Obama White House and an alpine climber with dreams of big summits\, Molly has dedicated her life to taking on seemingly insurmountable challenges. But it’s her personal struggle with mental health that gives her a profound understanding of how to harness the power of the mind to create change. \n\n\n \nThe Scale of Hope follows Molly as she prepares for an expedition in the Alaska Range while working to create a new climate narrative that centers her favorite question—”What can I do to help?”—with a surprising answer. It’s a story about struggle\, hope and what it will take to solve the greatest issue of our time. \n\n\n \nWatch the trailer\, then join us on the tenth to view spectacular footage on the big screen and hear Molly’s inspiring message of grit\, determination\, and hope. We’ll have live Q&A with Molly immediately following the film. \n\n\n \nOrinda Theatre is a 5-10-minute walk from the Orinda BART station. There are several restaurants close to the theatre. \n\n\n \nJoin us!
