SUMMARY:July Climate Circle: Refinery Shutdowns--Consequences for Our Communities
DESCRIPTION:Refinery Shutdowns–Consequences for Our Communities\nAre you concerned about Valero’s announced closure of its Benicia refinery? What happens if Chevron shuts down? \n\nEnvironmentalists point to improved health outcomes and progress towards a carbon-free future.\nIndustry argues that gasoline prices and pollution will increase because we will have to import less-regulated gas.\nUnions fear their members will not find well-paying jobs if the refinery closes.\nLocal city and state officials worry about loss of tax revenues.\n\nAs California transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources\, we need a framework for scaling down refinery operations that includes refinery accountability\, community support and safety oversight.   \nJoin us to discuss this multi-layered topic at our next Climate Circle on Monday\, July 7\, at 12:00 pm.  \nSign up here to receive the discussion materials and Zoom link. \n\nImage credit: Christine Stevens

SUMMARY:August Climate Circle: Status of California Climate Action in Wake of OBBB Act
DESCRIPTION:Status of California Climate Action in Wake of OBBB Act\nIn early July Congress passed the budget reconciliation bill\, outrageously and erroneously dubbed “One Big Beautiful Bill.” It became law on July 4th. Among many other impacts\, this bill guts federal climate and clean energy funding throughout the country\, including eliminating rebates and tax credits for solar and wind farms\, rooftop solar\, electric vehicles and energy-efficient home upgrades.  Since solar and wind are currently less expensive sources of energy than fossil fuels\, utility rates are predicted to jump another ten percent in the next few years. \nSome of the Questions to be Discussed\nHow can California continue it’s clean energy initiatives without the federal funding provided by the Inflation Reduction Act? What can we do in our state\, county and cities to keep moving forward toward a healthier environment for all? \nJoin us on Monday\, August 4th\, 2025\, noon to 1 PM to discuss how the climate-related features of this budget act will affect California businesses and residents and what we can do about it. \nSign up here to receive the discussion materials and Zoom link. \nCome curious. Leave inspired. Everyone is welcome. \n\nImage credit: Akil Mazumder on Pexels

SUMMARY:Community Climate Forum: Health\, Air Pollution\, and Our Homes
DESCRIPTION:Join us April 16 for our first Community Climate Forum! This re-imagined version of our Climate Circle will bring together community members every other month for a one-hour online conversation focused on key climate and clean-air campaigns happening right here in Contra Costa and the Bay Area. This month\, the topic is Health\, Air Pollution\, and Our Homes. \nWe’ll provide a short overview of the issue\, then open the topic for discussion\, and simple actions participants can take to help move solutions forward. \nWhat’s Up about Air Pollution\, Our Homes\, and Our Health?\nMost people think of cars or industry when they think about air pollution. But gas appliances inside our homes\, especially furnaces and water heaters\, are actually one of the largest sources of nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution in the Bay Area. \nNOx pollution contributes to smog and fine particulate pollution that worsen asthma\, increase heart and lung disease\, and shorten lives. In fact\, pollution from fossil-fuel furnaces and water heaters in the region is linked to thousands of asthma attacks each year and dozens of premature deaths\, with significant health costs across our communities. \nAt our first Community Climate Forum\, we’ll explore: \n\nHow pollution from buildings affects public health in the Bay Area\nWhy reducing it matters for our communities\, and\nWhat cleaner technologies like electric heat pumps can offer for healthier homes\n\nWe’ll also discuss the Bay Area Air District’s upcoming standards that will begin phasing in cleaner replacements for gas appliances as they reach the end of their life\, starting with water heaters in 2027 and furnaces in 2029. These rules are currently under review. Community voices will play an important role in ensuring they remain strong while working well for all households. \nJoin us to learn more about this issue and how you can help support clean air protections in the Bay Area for healthier homes for all our families. \nRegister for the Community Climate Forum to be sent the Zoom link \n_____________________ \nImage created in Google Gemini
